Working on a sketch of Sheridan Glacier this early day of December 2019, the glacier is moving so fast and the ice is disappearing so quickly I cannot keep up.............
Join me for an Art opening at the Bear Gallery in Fairbanks on September 6th, 2019. I have been working o get ready for several upcoming shows and I hope you will join me either in Fairbanks or in Girdwood.
I will be giving a presentation about my work and Art and Science in the Girdwood Community room on September the 12th at 6:30 pm. Please join me. Some of my personal collection will also be on display at Spoonline Market Restaurant in Girdwood.
Today we will talk about texture. Texture is about surfaces that are facing different directions and because of that they catch the light differently. To demonstrate that, I want to show you these two white panels which are identical in the light and they look the same. Watch what happens if I lift this one up so that it catches more light, see how much brighter it is. I use this all the time in my work and here is a little bit on an exagerated texture, look how much brighter that is than the background. That is because it sticks out and catches more light.
In 2015 I was Artist-in-Residence at Katmai National Park and I did a lot of drawings, I filled two sketchbooks and then did water colors while on the boat when I was out there there along the coast. This is just one of the watercolors that I did of this scene from Amalik Bay then here is the small study a 16" x 20" oil study, then here is the finished painting. #katmainationalpark #alaskapaintings Art and Science on the Katmai Coast Art Show traveling exhibit is Opening on March 1st, with be available to view through March 29th.
If you are in Ketchikan, Alaska or will be in March, be sure to stop by the Main Street Gallery to see Katmai Coast traveling exhibit. I will be at the opening on March 1st and would love to meet you! This month I have been exploring the ice and riding bikes around my home town Cordova, Alaska looking for more glacial landscapes to sketch, then later to paint.
"Right here I am painting these four related scenes they are surf paintings. I like to say I am just learning how to do this, so what I so is do a bunch of studies together and I work on one and if something works on one, I go to the other and work on the others. It is a great way to learn, which is what I am doing here." Here is a sampling of my Painting at the End of the Ice Age. This exhibit will begin traveling in 2019!
